Herbal medication has become one of the attractive fields of medical research with a long history of successful application throughout the world. The history of traditional medicines in Iran, like that of the Chinese and Greek goes back to more than 2000 years ago. Today, extraction and purification of active ingredients from natural sources and their semi synthesis are of considerable importance. Due to climatic diversity, the central region of Iran is the habitats of many medicinal plants. In recent years, large Companies producing herbal medicine was developed in this region. Furthermore, the replacement of conventional crops with water-efficient ones such as medicinal plants is inevitable due to water deficiency. So, the main mission of Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran- Central Region was set on research in the field of secondary metabolites of medicinal plants.
