Pomegranate is widely consumed in Iran. Part of annual production is also exported. During the last five years its production is more than doubled and reached the record of one million tones per year. The area under cultivation is increased and new pomegranate gardens are emerging. Having appropriate pomegranate cultivars for different areas is the most important prerequisite of attaining favorable fruits with high yield and eventually profitable and sustainable production. The first step in release of pomegranate cultivars is to have a seed collection of various pomegranate genotypes. Pomegranate is native of Iran and a plenty of genetic resources of it are outspread in all of the country. Several pomegranate phenotype collections are already developed by Agricultural and natural resources research, education and extension organization of Iran (AREO) but they are not screened genetically. The aim of this project is to genetically screen the largest pomegranate phenotype collection, i.e. Yazd collection, to attain a genotype collection. At the same time morphological parameters are recorded and important metabolites are measured to have a core genotype collection with known properties and ready to be used for cultivar release researches
