Collecting and analysis of licorice (Glycirrhizaglabra) wild populations of Iran in order to introduce elite genotypes

Licorice (GlycyrrhizaglabraL.) is an important commercial medicinal plant belonging to Leguminosae. One of the main ingredients in licorice is glycyrrhizin (ranging 5-24% of dry weight). The sweetness of licorice root is due to the presenceof this compound. Glycyrrhizin is used as sweetener and flavor in the confectionary and tobacco industries. Also, the root of licorice contains more than 400 other compound, made it important in pharmaceuticalindustry.Licorice became an endangered plant species, because of overexploitation of the root from the nature. Over-harvesting of the licorice wild populations is a destructive action which resulted in restricted supply of raw materials for different industries. Development of new cultivars to harvest licorice root as a conventional crop is unavoidable. The aim of this study is collecting and analysis of licoricefrom wild populations of Iran. We are searching for the elite genotypes with high yield and glycyrrhizin for our ongoing projects.
