Lamiaceae is one of the largest and important flowering plants family containing about 440 species in 220 genera. The eight species of the Dracocephalum genus have been found in Iran. Dracocephalum Kotschyi belongs to Lamiaceae family. This important- rare medicinal plant are traditionally used for caring rheumatism, fever and relief the pain. D. Kotschyi has several bioactive compounds likes "Limonene" and "Alpha Terpinol". An anticancer drug (Spinal-z) based on D. Kotschyi is successfully used in Iran for treatment of blood and digestion system cancers. The plant is naturally propagated by seeds. The seeds have poor viability and a hard coat which is almost impermeable to water and so the seed dormancy breaking process needs months to overcome. Hence, very few seedlings are produced from the seeds. Because of excessive harvesting of this valuable medicinal plant, the low traditionally reproduction rate cannot met prerequisite to restore its habitats. This herb is going to be categorized as under extinction species and tissue culture-mediated propagation can serve as one of the alternative source for preparation of plantlet from elite genotype for commercial production of D. Kotschyi in the field and or even green house.
